Parker started the week off with a cold which developed into a nagging cough by Monday night. He seemed himself on Tuesday but as we were eating dinner with the Fischers Kate commented that his cheeks were rosey and I noticed he was not his normal self. When I awoke to a coughing, fussy baby at 2:00am, I noticed he was breathing really fast. I did our routine nebulizer treatment and Parker did not seem to improve. After several episode of Veggie Tales and a dose of Motrin, he slept a bit in my arms.
Wednesday morning I decided to take him to urgent care at 8AM (since my doctor would not be in until 10am) and while trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, they did not seem real worried about his breathing. I kept telling myself, "You are overreacting, Parker is fine," but after a couple more hours at home with a baby who was working really hard to breath and taking over 60 breaths per minute, I strapped him in the car and headed to my office (which is also Parker's pediatrician).![]()
(He is looking pitiful on the way down to SLC)
After an assessment by Dr. Nguyen, Parker was started on oxygen and I was told we would be headed down to Primary Children's Hospital for the night. Although this was a scary time, I felt reassured knowing that Parker was going to be watched closely and given the appropriate treatments.
Parker was a wreck during the day on Wednesday and crying most of the night, but after his treatment at 4AM Thursday, he slept until 7:30Am and woke up a new little boy! Probably due to knowing and working for my Pediatrician (which can sometimes come in handy!) we were sent home a little earlier than normal. Dr. Nguyen sent Parker home on oxygen, prednisone and breathing treatments every 4 hours. I was instructed to listen to his breath sounds and change treatment accordingly (no pressure!).
We followed up this morning and Parker seems to be getting back to his ornery self. Thanks for everyone's prayers, emails and calls, it meant a lot to us!
PS: As for Baby #2, check with me in a few years. This week about did me in! =)

Oh wow! Good thing you listened to your motherly instincts! Glad he is feeling better!!
So why was he having trouble breathing? I can't imagine going through that with him. The pictures almost made me cry, poor little buddy. I saw through your status on FB that he was sick, but I had no idea it was so serious. Thank God he is feeling better. I will pray for his continued good health. Love you guys!
He had a respiratory virus that was complicated by his asthma...it was all such a whirlwind that not many people knew. We are on the mend now!
Oh, poor little guy. I am thankful he is getting better and I hope you are getting some more sleep now. It is stressful to have a sick baby!
What a sweetie! Give him an extra dose of hugs and kisses from the Z's.
Glad he is well again.
I'm so thankful he is okay, and that you all were able to be home for the weekend. I'm hoping it has been restful...there is nothing more trying than a hospital stay with a little one. Parker is so lucky to have his NP mommy:)
Oh that carseat picture....I'm glad he's back to his old self.
